Area is the number of square units needed to cover a flat surface. You can find the area of some figures by counting squares. Sometimes you need to count half squares to find the area of a figure.

For example, this problem is asking us to figure out how many square units of the grid shaded region. Taking a look at this grid, we can see that have ten square units covered by this area right. And, two more units right and one unit left. so we’re going to add all of those square units together.

Find the area of shaded portion of a grid

Altogether, how many we have so far well in this section right here we have ten and in this section right here we have two and of course we have one here in one here which is two more so that gives us a total of fourteen whole square units.

But notice we have half square units of shaded region that we have to put together, if we combine this half of the square unit with this half of the square unit that gives us one more whole square unit and then we have another half here and we have another half right here which gives us another whole square unit and we have half of a square unit left over. So we are going to write one half of the right shaded region here when adding one plus one plus half that gives us a total of two and a half square units. Now, we have to add fourteen plus two and a half and that gives us a total of 16 and a half square units so we would say the area that is covered by the shaded portion is 16 and 1/2 square units.
